Understanding the stages of periodontal disease is important in being able to plan for and treat periodontal disease appropriately. A practical approach to identifying, diagnosing, and treating all stages of periodontal disease including dental charting, dental radiographs, proper use of ultrasonic scalers, and hand instruments will be reviewed and demonstrated in the wet lab portion

  1. Oral anatomy, examination and dental charting techniques
  2. Periodontal disease: identification, diagnosis and treatment
  3. Periodontal instrumentation
  4. Dental radiology techniques and positioning
  1. Review of Periodontal instrumentation: Care and maintenance, proper use of periodontal instrumentation and sharpening of periodontal instruments
  2. Proper dental charting, cleaning and polishing techniques
  3. Dental radiology positioning techniques and basis understanding of normal dental radiology
Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session you will be able to:

  1. Identify the important anatomical structures in the oral cavity
  2. Understand and perform a complete oral examination and dental charting
  3. Properly recognize all stages of periodontal disease
  4. Effectively and accurately educate clients about periodontal disease and home care
  5. Perform a complete dental cleaning, scaling and polishing using proper techniques
  6. Demonstrate properly sharpen of your periodontal instruments
